Sound, Space and Interaction

Assignment

You have to make an interactive, application that communicates with the audience/participant(s)/user(s) purely by means of sound.

The interface can be separated in two parts: the input/control part and the output part.
The input interface can be sound based (i.e. loudness, pitch, speech/timbre analysis) or based on other forms of input (sensors, keyboard, mouse etc.).
The output of the application should be based on sound only. Part of this is the design of your own sonic language.

It's not allowed to use the computer screen as part of the application/environment. The application has to be designed is such a way that the screen is obsolete and can be switched off.

The participant should be able to interact with an environment or space and get feedback or information back from the environment only by means of sound.

The environment should change according to designed rules of interactivity. This means the participant can change the environment by performing certain actions and/or the behavior of the environments changes according to what the participant does.

The application/environment can be for a single user/participant or for multiple users/participants.

Since network communication is integrated in Max/MSP it could be interesting to think of a network based application.

The assignment has to be realized with the Max/MSP programming environment for Mac OS X or Windows.

The assignment can be done individually or in groups of two.

The assignment should be made especially for this class and not relate to work for any of the other classes.

First of all a proposal has to be made and approved. Proposals have to be send in written from to both evdheide at liacs dot nl and the lab assistant. In case of a collaboration both names have to be mentioned in the proposal.

In order to pass the exam you have to present your application in the class, present a copy of your application (including sound files, etc.) on cd-rom or dvd-rom and write a short report about development of your work and how you collaborated.
