Perceptualization
Edwin van der Heide & Maarten Lamers
ASSIGNMENT 1:
Find an example telecommunication system that communicates using another sense than sight or hearing. In 1 page, describe the system shortly, discuss it (strengths, weaknesses, your opinion), and include references to the information sources. Hand in your page at the start of lecture 3 (19-11-2008).
ASSIGNMENT 2:
Find an example perceptualization system. It should make a signal or stream of information perceivable and interpretable, in a way that does not involve a display screen. It can be a scientific or artistic work.
Present your finding to the class in 5 minutes. In the presentation you must shortly describe the system, discuss the language/interpretation involved, mention its strengths and weaknesses. Make your presentation concise and to-the-point. There will be room for discussion and questions that you should be able to answer.
Also, in 1 page provide an overview of your presentation that includes a reference to the source information (this cannot be a handout of your PowerPoint presentation, for example). Hand in your page at the start of lecture 6 (10-12-2008). This assignment must be done individually.
ASSIGNMENT 3:
Create a system that makes a signal or stream of information spatially perceivable and interpretable, in a way other than projecting it onto a display screen. It should map dimensions in the input signal/data to dimensions in the output sense(s).
You must demonstrate your system to the class, in such a way that others can experience it. Provide at least 2 different input signals or data sets (different in content) for the demonstration. Explain the mapping you made, and give your system a name.
In 1 page, describe your system, the mapping, and language/interpretation issues. Hand in your page on the presentation day (5-1-2009). This assignment can be done in teams of 2 students.
